Russian attack on the External Crisis Center of Zaporizhzhia NPP: consequences and current state of the center

On August 10, Zaporizhzhia was hit by a missile strike, which damaged the External Crisis Center of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, an essential part of the plant’s safety system. Despite partial damage, the personnel continue their work, monitoring the radiation situation in Ukraine.

The Operational Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on the incident.

According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, Russian troops attacked Zaporizhzhia, as a result of which the External Crisis Center suffered significant damage. There were no injuries among the employees, although the building was significantly damaged.

This center performs critically essential functions in the power plant’s safety system, ensuring continuous monitoring of the nuclear and radiation situation in the observation zone, in particular in the territory controlled by Ukraine.

As the occupants of the Zaporizhzhia NPP are preventing the automatic transmission of data on the state of the reactors and the level of radiation, the specialists of the External Crisis Center continue to conduct regular monitoring and promptly inform about the situation, which helps to reduce risks and respond to potential threats promptly.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been under Russian occupation since March 2022, will not be able to resume its work until the end of the conflict.
