An outbreak of a dangerous disease has been recorded in Ukraine: more than 150 infected people in Kyiv

In Kyiv, there is a significant increase in cases of Lyme disease, which is a systemic tick-borne borreliosis. According to the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 164 new cases were registered in May and June 2025, while in March and April, their number was only 18.

According to the report, among the registered cases, there were 146 adults and 18 children. The Public Health Center explained this by the increased tick population in the summer. Compared to the previous two months, which saw significantly fewer cases of infection, there is an apparent surge in activity.

Lyme disease is a naturally occurring infection caused by bacteria that are transmitted by infected ticks. Symptoms can include migratory erythema on the skin, as well as damage to the nervous system, joints, muscles, and heart. Fortunately, the cases recorded in Kyiv did not lead to fatal consequences.

To prevent Lyme disease, it is essential to avoid tick bites, as there is currently no vaccine for the disease. Prevention recommendations include wearing protective clothing, using repellents, regularly checking the body for ticks, and removing them correctly.

When walking in nature, especially in forests and areas with tall grass, it is worth wearing light-colored clothing with long sleeves and tucking your pants into your socks, which will help to detect ticks in time and prevent them from getting on the skin. It is also recommended to use a hat to protect your hair.
