Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man costume auctioned for $200,000

It has been announced that the costume worn by Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 2 will be auctioned on September 4, 2023. The starting price will be $50,000, and the final estimate could reach $100,000-$200,000.

The costume was created by Frontline Design in collaboration with Oscar-winning designer James Acheson. Compared to the first film, the second part of the costume is characterized by a dark blue color, a more streamlined shape, a smaller lens size, and an enlarged spider logo on the chest. It is a stretchy spandex jumpsuit that incorporates shoes. The zippers are concealed on the sides and lower back for added convenience. According to information from PropStore Auction, some elements of the costume that were damaged during filming were restored.

“Spider-Man 2” was released in June 2004. The film follows Peter Parker as he struggles to balance his life as a superhero and a normal person. After a botched experiment, Dr. Otto Octavius, played by Alfred Molina, becomes Spider-Man’s enemy, blaming him for the tragedy. The film was directed by Sam Raimi and written by Alvin Sargent.

Maguire’s costume was also used in Spider-Man 3, where he faced personal challenges and new enemies. The first Spider-Man trilogy was highly praised by both audiences and critics, with the second film holding a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the success of this project, Columbia Studios launched a new series of films starring Andrew Garfield. Later, Marvel Studios and Sony created a series of films starring Tom Holland. The next movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is scheduled for release in 2026.

The auction will take place on September 4 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time and will be broadcast live.
