Overheating in cats: causes of breathing difficulties after active games

However, there are cases when this behavior can be dangerous. If your cat is panting at rest or has other symptoms, it’s time to see a vet. This could be a sign of a serious condition, such as asthma, heart failure, anemia, tumors, or severe infections.

Another risk is heatstroke. This is especially true for cats that are evolutionarily adapted to cool climates, but even other cats can get overheated. In the summer, it’s essential to make sure your cat always has access to cool water and a comfortable place to rest.

Stress can also be a cause of rapid breathing. Cats are sensitive to changes in their environment, and panting can be a sign of anxiety. In such cases, it’s helpful to provide a quiet home, multiple litter boxes, safe hiding places, or a change in food.

“If your cat is breathing heavily without exercise, or if he has no appetite, becomes lethargic, or starts breathing with his abdominal muscles, this is abnormal,” the veterinarian emphasizes.

In such a situation, it is recommended to urgently consult a doctor so as not to put your pet’s health at risk.
