The number of subjects in schools will be significantly reduced: what changes await the educational process

Ukraine is planning a significant reform of high school, which involves changes to the set of mandatory subjects. It is noted that the new rules will come into force in 2027, and the pilot project will begin as early as 2025. Students will have to adapt to the new system, in which only a few core subjects will remain.

According to the innovations, high school students will be required to study the Ukrainian language and literature, the history of Ukraine, mathematics, English, physical education, and the course “Defense of Ukraine”. Additionally, students will be able to choose one subject from the following: art, technology, computer science, or financial literacy.

At the same time, several subjects, such as physics, chemistry, biology, geography, foreign literature, world history, and civics, will lose their mandatory status. However, they will still be available for study in the context of specialized or elective studies.

The main goal of the reform is to create specialized lyceums, in which students will be able to independently choose their field of study and shape their own educational path. Students will receive three levels of choice: a study profile, specific subjects, and additional courses outside the main profile.

The Ministry of Education and Science emphasizes that when choosing a profile, students will be able to deepen their knowledge in the desired field. For example, students of the natural sciences profile will be able to take more courses in chemistry and physics. In contrast, the language profile will offer more hours of Ukrainian and foreign languages.

In general, the reform aims to enhance the quality of education and increase students’ readiness for future professional activities.
