Ruslan Bortnik considered who impedes sanctions against Russia – US or Europe

The expert in his blog notes that the EU special representative will soon visit the United States to discuss sanctions on Russia. However, the situation is much more complicated, as Europe requires decisive action against the backdrop of a sharp increase in its trade with Russia in the first half of the year.

Paired with this, Trump draws attention to the fact that Europe is trying to use it as a tool to solve its problems, while continuing to import Russian energy through third countries. This indicates their inconsistency in politics, which may be profitable for Europe itself. The expert explicitly points out that Europe is purchasing large amounts of energy from India, which is derived from Russian oil, and the work of the Southern Stream-2 2 2 project, which operates through Turkey.

That is, according to a specialist, Trump recognizes Russia’s illegal actions and can support the imposition of new sanctions. However, initially, Europe must demonstrate the seriousness of its actions without being undermined by purchases made through third countries.

The expert concludes that European countries want Trump to undertake “dirty work” and participate in conflicts that do not align with the interests of the United States. He believes that Europeans should act responsibly.

Expert observations and comments help to understand how difficult it is to pursue international policy when the interests of different countries do not always coincide.
