Student bookings: will deferrals be canceled during vacation or enrollment?
In Ukraine, the mobilization process is ongoing, and students have the right to deferment. However, the question often arises as to what happens to this right during the holidays or during the admission campaign.
Andriy Hukalyuk, First Vice-Rector of Lviv National University, assures that students do not lose their deferment during the summer holidays. The documents provided by the university outline the terms of study, such as from 2023 to 2027, which specifies that during the summer breaks, students continue their studies.
However, there are nuances regarding the transition between educational levels. In particular, on June 30, students who have completed their bachelor’s degree are expelled from the university, and at this point, their deferment ends. It is renewed only after enrollment in a master’s degree program, which begins in September.
A similar situation is observed for those who have completed a master’s degree and plan to enter graduate school. When one stage of study is completed, a person formally ceases to be a student, temporarily losing the grounds for deferment.
Gukalyuk emphasized that these rules are approved by law, so the university cannot change them, and everything is clearly regulated.
Thus, students experience a particular sense of stability during their studies and holidays. Still, it is essential to remember the summer period, when one stage of study is completed and the next has not yet begun. At this time, men may formally fall under mobilization rules.
