A new subject will be introduced in schools: students will study “law”

In Novovolynsk, deputies have introduced an initiative to teach eighth-graders how to ride bicycles in schools, with the subsequent issuance of a cyclist’s license. This decision was made by the city council on October 15, and a proposal is already being prepared for submission to the regional level and the Ministry of Education.

The main goal of this course is to increase children’s road safety, instill responsibility in road traffic, and promote the popularization of active modes of transportation. Bicycles are becoming increasingly popular among schoolchildren, serving not only as entertainment but also as a means of transportation.

The program will include teaching traffic rules with an emphasis on cycling, as well as familiarizing students with bicycle structure and maintenance. The course consists of practical classes led by safety officers and motoring instructors, with the final stage being testing. Those who successfully pass it will receive a special cyclist’s license.

Those interested are already being recruited to the Taras Shevchenko Novovolynsk Lyceum No. 4, where the course is currently being tested. Students practice on specially equipped platforms, and teachers are developing a textbook, “Riding a Bicycle: Practical and Theoretical Course”, which can become the basis for other schools in Ukraine.

The authors of the initiative point out that similar courses are already operating effectively in European countries, such as Poland, and that their implementation has significantly reduced the number of injuries among children on the roads, contributing to the education of conscious road users.

Now the decision depends on the central authorities. If they support the initiative, then in the near future, schoolchildren in Ukraine will be able not only to know the rules of the road, but also to have their “rights” to ride a bicycle.
