October 26, according to the new church calendar, commemorates the holy martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki, known to the people as Demetrius.

This saint was nicknamed the Myrrh-Bearer because his relics exuded a healing, fragrant oil. Other names for the holiday include “Dmitry’s Day” and “Great Autumn”.

On this day, it is traditionally necessary to visit the temple and light a candle for the repose of loved ones. It is also recommended to prepare pancakes with honey at home for remembrance. The first pancake should be anointed with oil mixed with honey and left on a plate with the words: “Remember, God, honest relatives.” This pancake is not eaten, since it is intended for souls who have already left this world, and it is believed that they visit their homes on this holy day.

Pancakes with various fillings are placed on the table, along with other dishes such as potatoes, sauerkraut, cucumbers, and fried chicken. It is essential to put a spoon from each dish before the first pancake as a sign of honoring the dead. This food is placed under the icons on a new towel, and a large container of water is placed nearby, because it is believed that it is essential not only to eat with the soul, but also to drink.

This day marks the beginning of winter, which indicates the end of household chores. In the past, it was on Dmitry that the wedding season ended; if a girl did not receive an offer, then this year the chances of getting married were reduced. If you are single and want to meet your soulmate, there is a belief that advises you to go to a birch tree, hug it, and leave it a scarf or ribbon, as this tree is usually helpful.

Saint Dmitry is also considered a patron saint in times of war and conflict; he is asked for courage and endurance, as well as for the healing of the eyes. You can write a request on a maple leaf and leave it in an oak hollow, hoping that it will be fulfilled.

What should you avoid on October 26? The Church disapproves of bullying, envy, gossip, and negative emotions. Also, on this day, it is not advisable to do heavy physical labor, have fun, or engage in activities that can be harmful. It is believed that marriages should not be concluded before Dmitry, because such unions may be short-lived.

This period is special because it is believed that, with Dmitry, begins the time when it is better not to conclude wedding bonds, as this may lead to particular difficulties in the future.
