The more couples communicate with each other, the stronger their relationships become, study finds

A study by scientists at the University of California found that the frequency of gossip among partners positively affects the quality of their relationship. The results of the work are published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

Seventy-six couples who have been living together for more than a year took part in this experiment. Each participant carried a portable recorder, which enabled the scientists to record and analyze about 100,000 audio clips from couples’ daily lives.

It turned out that gossip became an integral part of their communication; on average, couples spent about 38 minutes per day on this activity. Those who gossiped more often reported higher levels of life satisfaction and better relationship quality.

The authors of the study, Chandler M. Spahr and Megan L. Robbins, noted that gossip serves as a joint activity that strengthens the sense of unity between partners, trust, and other positive elements of the relationship.

In addition, scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that about 19% of Americans have already used artificial intelligence to maintain a virtual romantic relationship, based on Reddit posts.

Undoubtedly, such studies demonstrate the importance of daily communication in partnerships, which can significantly deepen the emotional connection.
