Why you should not talk loudly on November 23 and what tea to prepare for your husband: signs and prohibitions on Amphilochia

On November 23, according to the new church calendar, Saint Amfilochius, Bishop of Iconium, is commemorated, as are all those who died of hunger in Ukraine.

On this day, there were traditions of fun and celebration in Ukraine. People organized parties, sang songs, and had a feast with beer and pies, which they cooked together, celebrating the completion of the sleigh journey. However, in view of the Christmas fast, strong entertainment is best avoided.

Also on this day, Alexander Nevsky was honored, and the soldiers’ fate was divined. For divination, three buns were baked, one of which was embedded with a cross. One bun was placed on the threshold, another – near the icons, and the third – on the bench. If a roll with a cross was on the doorstep, it meant that a relative would return from the war, but if it was near icons, it foreshadowed tragic events.

Mothers prepared special charms for their sons who were about to be drafted into the army. They spoke words on the fabric, imbuing it with wishes for protection and well-being. This fabric had to be sewn into the son’s clothes, and he, having received a military uniform, would sew it into the collar. It was considered an important talisman.

In addition, there was a conspiracy to improve relations in the family – special words were said at tea, asking for peace and harmony.

The memory of fallen soldiers is also commemorated today. There is another way of divination: catch a spider and put it in a jar. If the spider remains alive after six days, it is a sign of good news. If you put him in a pot and he starts weaving a web, it means that the hero will return home.

On this day, girls can take a sprig of cherry from someone else’s garden and display it in a pantry for marriage. If the branch blooms before Christmas, the girl will get married this year.

On November 23, people baked pies with cabbage and jam, and the leftovers were given to animals.

What is undesirable to do today:
On this day, you should not show anger, speak obscenely, or be jealous. It is forbidden to refuse help, remember the dead badly, or drink alcohol. You should also not move or find out about relationships – it is believed that this can lead to bad luck.
