BZVP criticized: they call for military training until the age of 25
The Basic Military Training (BMTT) program is currently showing low effectiveness, as Olga Chabanyuk, deputy head of the Trade Union of Educators, said in an interview.
She noted that, as of September 1, all higher education institutions must include basic military training in their curricula, regardless of specialty. Chabanyuk explained that, under the law, men under 25 who are fit for service are required to undergo such training. Still, the Ministry of Education’s recommendations differ somewhat.
The ministry sent a letter stating that the recommendations apply to first- and second-year students, that is, those approximately 18-20 years old. The trade union requested a review of this practice, since lowering the draft age could result in situations in which all students who have undergone training are considered ready for service, Chabanyuk noted.
In her opinion, the MBTT program is not very practical for several reasons. She emphasized that educational institutions have been tasked with training instructors urgently and providing the necessary materials for classes.
The Deputy Head of the Trade Union also emphasized that practical classes should be held at the training centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are currently focused on training mobilized personnel. This may affect the quality of student education.
In addition, in response to the question of possible improvements, Chabanyuk suggested allowing students to undergo military training until they reach the age of 25, rather than only in the second year, as is currently stipulated in the recommendations.
