Johnny Depp to star in ‘The Master and Margarita’ film adaptation

American actor Johnny Depp will play the main role in the first English-language adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel “The Master and Margarita”. Variety reported the information.

Depp will not only star in the film, but also act as one of the producers. The project’s development will take place under the auspices of his company, IN.2 Film. Producers Jeanne Dubarry, Svetlana Dali and Grace Lo have also joined the team.

The director has not yet been determined. Along with Depp, Steven Deuters and Steven Malit appear as producers, and filming is scheduled for the end of 2026.

Svetlana Dali and Grace Lo are currently suing Luminosity Pictures, claiming exclusive rights to the film adaptation of “The Master and Margarita”. This dispute arose after the release of the 2024 film directed by Mikhail Lokshin.

Over the past decades, directors such as Federico Fellini, Roman Polanski, Terry Gilliam, and Baz Luhrmann have attempted to adapt the cult novel into a film. Still, none of their projects have been realized.

The film Lokshin, released in 2024, received positive reviews, including from Afisha editor Yevgeny Tkachev.
