Supermarkets in Ukraine have begun to refuse to accept certain hryvnia banknotes: where to go for help

In supermarkets and stores in Ukraine, cashiers often refuse to accept specific bills or coins, citing a lack of change. In such situations, experts from the “Protection of Consumer Rights” emphasize that this practice is a violation of the law.

According to their explanations, the cashier must provide the buyer with the opportunity to receive change, and not shift this obligation to the client. Clients do not need to look for opportunities to exchange large bills elsewhere, as this is illegal.

“The responsibility for the lack of change lies with the cashier. If he insists on something else, it is recommended to contact the store management,” experts comment.

The experts also paid special attention to market trading. The market administration is obliged to provide sellers with the necessary tools to control weights and ensure high-quality measurement of goods. If the buyer is faced with a refusal to carry out this inspection or a malfunction of the equipment, this should be regarded as a violation of his rights, and the relevant control authorities should be informed.

In addition, the actions of security guards in stores are becoming an urgent problem. According to experts, security guards who perform their functions based on contracts with third parties do not have the right to:

Demand compensation for damaged goods.
dictate to customers how to act with the goods.
In case of a conflict, it is advised to request viewing of surveillance camera recordings. If the situation is not resolved, the best option would be to call the police.
