Serious crisis in the energy system: Ukraine is approaching a blackout

With the onset of cold weather, Russia has significantly intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The new round of attacks is aimed at intimidating and demoralizing the Ukrainian population. These strikes have caused severe damage to power grids, increasing the risk of massive power outages across the country.

The eastern regions of Ukraine have become particularly vulnerable, as the main power plants are located in the west. The destruction of high-voltage lines supplying electricity to the east could lead to outages in these regions, which threatens to divide the country into two energy zones. As one European diplomat noted, Ukraine is threatened with a complete power outage in the east.

The situation in Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is one of the most difficult since the beginning of the conflict. Massive attacks are depleting air defense resources, which makes energy facilities more vulnerable. Not long ago, Ukraine offered Russia an energy truce, but it was rejected. Russia continues to intensify its attacks, using some 5,000 aerial targets, including drones and missiles, often targeting specific regions.

Ukraine’s energy sector is struggling to rebuild its infrastructure amid high-intensity attacks and a shortage of spare parts. DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko said the situation is getting worse despite their swift action. Russia is also trying to divide the power grid into separate “energy islands,” cutting off power to specific regions.
