No electricity for 8-10 pm: what Ukrainians should prepare for
Kyiv may face a severe scenario with prolonged power outages lasting up to 22 hours a day. The energy situation in the capital is assessed as critical. This is due to damage to the Kyivska substation, which charges the city with electricity from the Rivne nuclear power plant. The destruction of this key infrastructure has significantly complicated Kyiv’s energy supply, as noted by Oleg Popenko, head of the Union of Consumers of Public Utilities.
Kyiv’s domestic electricity generation currently meets only 25% of residents’ total needs, while the damaged substation supplies the remaining 75%. According to the expert, if the weather worsens and the temperature drops to -5 °C, the city may remain without electricity for a long time.
He emphasized that if there are new attacks on the substation, the situation could worsen further. Kyiv will be forced to rely only on its own generation, which is not enough even on warm days. “When the temperature drops to -10 °C, internal generation can decrease to 10%, which will lead to complete blackouts,” Popenko added.
Earlier, it was reported that the electricity outage schedules in Ukraine may be reduced, as the government made an important decision to improve the energy situation. Information was also published about potential problems in the power system that could cause additional blackouts.
