Today, January 7, is the name day of those named Athanasius, Basil, and John. This day is dedicated to the memory of three significant saints whose faith and virtue have become a model for many generations.

Saint Athanasius the Great

Saint Athanasius the Great (c. 296–373) served as Archbishop of Alexandria and was an outstanding theologian of the early Christian Church. He strongly opposed Arianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Athanasius is remembered for his devotion to the Orthodox faith and his deep knowledge of Christian dogmas. Saint Basil the Great

Saint Basil the Great (c. 330–379) was a bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, a theologian, and a prominent teacher of the Church. He became famous for his fight against heresies, particularly Arianism, as well as for his charitable activities, including the founding of the first monasteries and charitable institutions for the needy and sick. His contribution to the development of Christianity and his writings remain the basis of Christian philosophy and theology to this day.

Saint John the Theologian

Saint John the Theologian, known as one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, is considered the author of four books of the New Testament: the Gospel of John, three epistles, and Revelation. John was the earliest disciple of Jesus and an eyewitness to key events. He is famous for his devotion to love for people and for his profound theological reflections on the nature of God and His love for humanity. John the Theologian is one of the most revered saints in Christianity.

On this day, people named Athanasius, Vasily, and Ivan usually receive wishes of health and well-being. In Ukraine, this holiday is often celebrated in the family circle with wishes of happiness. Although it is an unofficial holiday, it is of great significance to Orthodox Christians.

It is also worth noting that the day of the angel John is celebrated on January 6, when they honor Saint John, one of the most revered prophets of Christianity. His name translates as “God is merciful,” and his life is an example of faith and strength of spirit.
