Hubble telescope discovers new cosmic object thanks to dark matter

A team of astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a new type of astronomical object: a starless dark-matter gas cloud, a relic of the early stages of galaxy formation. The object, dubbed Cloud-9, is located 14 million light-years from Earth.

The discovery is the first confirmation of the existence of such an object in the universe, helping scientists better understand galaxy formation, the early universe, and the nature of dark matter. Professor Alejandro Benitez-Llambay of the University of Milan Bicocca said that “this is the story of a failed galaxy”, noting that the absence of stars in Cloud-9 supports the theory that the initial building blocks of galaxies never managed to form.

Astronomers previously thought that Cloud-9 might be a faint dwarf galaxy, whose stars were not visible due to the limitations of ground-based telescopes. However, the Hubble Space Telescope has confirmed that this object does indeed contain stars.

The absence of stars provides a unique opportunity to study the internal characteristics of dark matter. The rarity of such objects and the potential for further research offer hope that more “unformed galaxies” or “relics” will be discovered, allowing us to deepen our knowledge of the early universe and the physics of dark matter.

This discovery is an important step not only in the study of dark matter but also in the understanding of the early development of the universe, giving scientists new tools to investigate one of the greatest mysteries of the cosmos.
