One of the cities will remain without electricity until 4 p.m.

The electricity supply situation in Kyiv and the region is likely to remain difficult for at least another 3-4 weeks, even if there is no new shelling. The main reason is insufficient electricity to meet the region’s needs fully. Oleg Popenko, head of the Union of Consumers of Public Utilities, stated this in an interview with a media outlet.

In January, residents of the capital will have to adhere to a schedule of electricity outages due to low temperatures predicted in the near future. “There is not enough electricity. Kyiv and the Kyiv region are deficient regions. To meet our needs, we are forced to take electricity from the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants, but, unfortunately, the capabilities of the power grids are limited,” Popenko explained.

The expert emphasized that the situation has become more complicated following the recent attacks on CHPP-5, CHPP-6, and the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, which significantly reduced the capacity for electricity production and distribution. He assured that, despite the measures taken, the energy situation will remain critical in the coming weeks and that, according to him, difficulties with electricity supply may persist for at least a month.

“The duration of the outages will depend on weather conditions. These can be interruptions of 6 to 8 hours a day, or much longer, even up to 16 hours a day,” he concluded.

Therefore, residents of the capital and the region should be prepared for possible extended power outages, especially in cold winter conditions, and follow the outage schedule.
