Fewer recruits? The influence of the peace plan on the size of the army
The US peace plan does not contain any restrictions on mobilization in Ukraine and does not prohibit strengthening the armed forces if necessary.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, expressed the opinion that the number of 800,000 military personnel during peacetime is sufficient for an effective response to potential threats from Russia. According to his comments, the American peace plan does not impose any framework on Ukraine, allowing the country to retain all existing conscription and military training mechanisms. Syrsky emphasized the importance of maintaining the Armed Forces’ operational efficiency without delays or obstacles.
Commenting on the issue of numbers, the general noted that this number is optimal for deterring possible attacks. He explained that this is not just a number, but a real safety indicator that prevents restarting the entire process from scratch in the event of an exacerbation.
Syrsky spoke clearly, stressing that there are no restrictions on mobilization. “All our mobilization capabilities remain unchanged,” he added. He also stated that Ukraine did not accept any conditions that could reduce its defense capability or create dependence on external solutions.
The general mentioned that at the initial stages of negotiations, it was proposed to reduce the army to 600,000 soldiers. However, assessing the risks and taking into account the war experience, Ukraine insisted on a larger number.
Previously, it was also reported that the enhanced training for the mobilized is undergoing significant changes.
