Ihor Tselyp: how subway trips inspired the creation of new songs

Ihor Tselyp, a Ukrainian singer, shared his thoughts on how the underground became, for him, an unexpected yet important space for creativity. With no communication and no access to social media in the subway, he can concentrate and create music.

The artist notes that frequent travels have taught him to perceive time in motion differently. What was once considered a simple trip became an integral part of his creative process. It is in the subway that he finds new ideas for melodies, rhythms, and texts, which later shape his compositions.

“It’s interesting, but many songs come to me precisely in the subway. When you’re driving, surrounded by people, noise, and movement, and there is no connection, in this silence the mind becomes clearer, and thoughts arise that are easily translated into music,” says Tselyp.

The singer believes that the subway has a unique atmosphere, where the most diverse human experiences merge — from fatigue to hope and peace. All this accumulates within him and later finds expression in music.

“The subway is a place where life passes very close by. People are silent, thinking about their own. I catch their moods, and they resonate in me. Sometimes I leave the station with inspiration already in my head,” says the singer.

For him, the lack of internet in the metro is not a disadvantage, but an advantage. This is a time when there are no distractions; there is an opportunity to be alone with your thoughts and feelings.

“This state is very sincere. There is no way to escape to the phone or chat. You stay here and now, and it is in such moments that the most spontaneous songs are born — without planning, just as a reaction to life,” the artist emphasizes.

He adds that compositions written on trips often retain their original mood and change little in the studio. He notes that it is important to record exactly what was felt between stations, in thoughts and pauses.

According to Ihor Tselip, spontaneous songs especially resonate with listeners because of their sincere emotion, energy, and truly experienced moments.
