Higher education institutions will fight for applicants: the Ministry of Education and Science announced new admission requirements

In 2029, Ukraine will undergo a radical change in the higher education admissions system: universities will compete for applicants. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadiya Kuzmichova.

According to her, the pilot project of academic lyceums plays a key role in this process. Starting September 1, students will be able to study only at schools that participate in this pilot. These children will be the only 2029 graduates eligible to enter universities.

About 200,000 students graduate in Ukraine annually, but in 2029, the number of potential applicants may decrease to 15,000, since these students will study in pilot academic lyceums. This sharp decline will affect the balance of higher education in the country.

The Ministry of Education and Science notes that, under the new conditions, competition will shift from among applicants to a struggle among universities for lyceum graduates. Higher education institutions will be forced to revise their programs and training conditions to attract a limited number of potential students.

Kuzmichova emphasized that schools’ participation in the pilot project gives students a significant advantage, as they will have direct access to admission in 2029. The admission of new institutions to this network continues until February 4.

The Ministry also notes that the high school reform is part of general changes in the education system aimed at improving the quality of education and a conscious choice of a further educational path.
