Extension of vacations or distance learning: new instructions from the Ministry of Education and Science for educational institutions

In Ukraine, it is again possible to extend vacations or transfer students to distance learning. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine has provided relevant recommendations for higher education institutions.

Deputy Minister of Education Mykola Trofymenko reported that the Ministry of Education and Science recommends that universities extend vacations or allow students to continue their studies online until February 8, 2026. Rectors of institutions have already received a corresponding letter.

However, the ministry emphasized that each institution will make the final decision on the format of studies. This is due to universities’ autonomous status. When making decisions, administrations must take into account the security situation in the region and the state of energy infrastructure.

The Ministry of Education and Science notes that the situation in different regions of Ukraine differs significantly, so there is no single approach for all universities. This allows some universities to return to full-time studies earlier, while others may remain in a distance learning mode or extend the winter holidays.

In addition, according to Trofymenko, universities perform an important social function by providing support centers for students, employees, and community residents. In Kyiv, for example, student associations are actively involved in supporting older people and people with disabilities.

The Ministry of Education is working with the Ministry of Social Policy and international partners to make the most effective use of available resources while ensuring the safety of volunteers amid a difficult security and energy situation.
