Dancing, walking and puzzles: which hobbies after 50 contribute to maintaining health

After reaching the age of fifty, many people have more opportunities for self-development, and this stage can be the starting point for a new active life.

Studies indicate that new habits, activities and hobbies can have a positive effect on health, improve mood and even extend life expectancy, according to information from Martha Stewart.

Scientists emphasize that lifestyle in middle age significantly affects well-being in older age. A huge study conducted in 2023 showed that the implementation of several healthy habits can add up to 24 years to life. Among them are physical activity, healthy eating, regular sleep, stress management and social connections.

A simple and affordable way to stay healthy is walking. Even 4,000 steps a day can reduce the risk of premature death. Walking activates brain activity, improves heart function and creates conditions for communication.

Trying new activities like swimming, tennis, or yoga can also help. These activities stimulate the brain, improve coordination, and concentration.

Learning a new language is another way to boost your memory. Studies show that even people in their 60s and older can benefit from learning to slow cognitive aging.

Creative pursuits like photography, crafting, or other hobbies that require focus and fine motor skills can also help improve memory and thinking speed. In a study of people ages 60 to 90, engaging in these activities for three months significantly increased brain performance.

Experts also recommend taking classes or tutoring others. Lectures and online courses force your brain to analyze information, plan, and search for answers.

Dancing is another way to combine physical activity with memory training and social contact. It also helps maintain balance, strengthens the heart and reduces the likelihood of falls.

Video games can have a positive effect on memory, as some 3D games train spatial thinking and speed of decision-making.

Stress management is equally important. Meditation, yoga, journaling or communication with pets can reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
