Walking in the sun: why it’s dangerous for animals

Walking in the summer can lead to skin and health problems for dogs.

According to the Express, the sun’s rays not only provide warmth, but can also cause burns, overheating and serious illnesses.

With the onset of warm days, owners are more likely to take their four-legged friends for walks. However, veterinarians warn about the dangers of heat. As veterinarian Anna Forman notes, sunburn for dogs is as painful as for humans. Regular exposure to ultraviolet rays can lead to skin cancer. It is worth noting that “tanning” is not beneficial for dogs, because their body does not produce vitamin D through the skin.

The most dangerous time for being in the sun is from 11:00 to 15:00. At this time, it is better to limit dog walking to 45-60 minutes. It is important that the animal always has access to shade, fresh water and the opportunity to cool down, otherwise the risk of overheating increases. If a dog’s body temperature exceeds 39.2°C, it can lead to heatstroke.

Breeds with short faces, such as pugs and French bulldogs, are particularly vulnerable, as are older dogs or those with health problems that make them less able to handle heat due to their respiratory systems.

Dogs with light skin or thin coats are also at risk. Vulnerable areas such as the nose, ears, belly and groin are most susceptible to burns. However, even dark breeds are not completely protected from the sun.
