Payments to French refugees carry risks: what dangers await Ukrainians
France currently provides assistance to Ukrainians, but after 2027 the rules may change significantly.
Many Ukrainians in France receive stable support under temporary protection. The protection status has been extended until March 2027. The basic assistance, provided in the form of monthly payments, is approximately 426 euros per person without housing. In addition, a certain part of the rental costs is covered by the SAF system, and medical services are available free of charge. For many, especially the elderly, this creates the illusion of a comfortable life without unnecessary worries.
“You just live and receive assistance,” experts note.
However, serious challenges will arise after the end of this status. Under French law, there is no automatic transition to permanent residence for refugees, and many have difficulties here.
In order to remain in the country, it is necessary to meet strict requirements. In particular, to obtain standard status, you need to have a stable income of more than 1,300 euros per month. For most pensioners, this is a difficult task.
In fact, the possibilities to stay in the country are limited. One option is if the refugee’s children have received official jobs in France and can provide for their parents. Another option is serious health problems that require treatment that is not available in Ukraine.
Earlier, it was reported about a change in the rules for Ukrainians in Poland, which could directly affect the population trying to find a new home in Europe. Refugees are increasingly deciding to move to Germany, and the Czech Republic has also made important decisions to support Ukrainian refugees.
