Ukrainian woman denied entry to Poland because of “radioactive” $100 bill
A curious incident occurred on the Ukrainian-Polish border when the radiation control system was triggered by one of the banknotes carried by a Ukrainian citizen.
The incident occurred during a routine check at the Medika checkpoint, when Polish border guards stopped a 54-year-old woman who was trying to cross the border with almost $10,000 in cash, as reported by RMF24.
During a standard scan, the radiometric system recorded an increased level of radiation, which prompted an in-depth examination of the passenger’s belongings. As a result of the check, it was established that the source of the signal was one $100 bill, on which an excess of natural radiation background was detected by 1,905 times.
Experts found that the banknote contained an isotope used in medical devices. The bill was isolated and placed in a special protective container. The border guards also consulted with the Polish State Atomic Energy Agency.
According to the woman, the money was intended to buy a car. However, due to the detected anomaly, she was denied entry to Poland and was forced to return with the money.
Representatives of the Polish border service reported that such situations are not the first time, and all checkpoints are equipped with radiometric systems to detect radiation threats.
