A plant has been discovered that is a thousand times hotter than the most seasoned pepper in the world
There is a plant that truly surpasses even the hottest pepper in the world in terms of spiciness. It is not a culinary product, but rather a chemical weapon created by nature. This plant has the ability not only to cause burns, but also to destroy your nerve endings. It is the Moroccan spurge, which is better not to approach even in a protective suit.
When Pepper X looks like a soft toy
For example, the hottest pepper in the world, Pepper X, has a rating of 2.69 million units on the Scoville scale. This can be dangerous for humans. Pure capsaicin, which is responsible for the heat of peppers, is estimated at 16 million units and can be fatal in large doses.
However, let’s consider a substance called resiniferatoxin, which is found in Moroccan spurge – its rating is an incredible 16 billion Scoville units. It’s a thousand times stronger than pure capsaicin, so it’s not just about the heat—it’s real pain.
Natural chemical weapons
Resiniferatoxin is found in the cactus-like plant Euphorbia resinifera, which grows in Morocco, as well as in the Nigerian spurge. This plant has developed this poison for a reason, but as a defense mechanism — no animal will dare to approach it a second time, because even a small contact leads to serious burns.
Unlike regular peppers, this substance cannot be eaten without risking life. It affects the same pain receptors (TRPV1) as capsaicin, but does so much more intensely.
Mechanism of action: nerve destruction
When you eat spicy food, capsaicin briefly excites nerve endings, causing a burning sensation. However, with resiniferatoxin, the situation is completely different. It “sticks” to the receptor so tightly that it disrupts the cell’s function. A huge amount of calcium ions flow through the nerve endings.
This overloads the nervous system to the point that the nerves responsible for the sensation of pain simply die. This process is called permanent desensitization — a person loses the ability to feel pain in the area of contact, as the nerves are destroyed at the cellular level.
A lesson for spicy food lovers
The next time you order too spicy food at a restaurant or add a little hot sauce to your pizza, don’t forget about Moroccan milk thistle. Your tears and burning in your mouth are only minor discomfort compared to the storm hidden in the stems of this terribly hot plant. Nature has its own ways of protecting itself, and it does it quite effectively.
