Is the dollar losing its appeal? Ukrainians are advised to abandon the currency

Not so long ago, the dollar was considered a reliable means of storing savings, but now this strategy is becoming less effective. Financial analysts are increasingly pointing out that keeping all funds in foreign currency is not the optimal solution in 2026.

Experts from Investment Capital Ukraine emphasize that the classic approach to investing in the dollar no longer guarantees profit. Moreover, switching to euros or pounds also does not seem like a convincing option.

Instead, experts advise focusing on a less popular but more profitable instrument – domestic government bonds (OVDP). This is actually an opportunity to “lend” funds to the state at interest and later receive them back with a profit.

Interestingly, according to analysts, hryvnia-denominated OVDPs remain more profitable than the dollar until the exchange rate exceeds 51 hryvnia. Currently, the exchange rate is about 44 UAH per dollar, and the yield on bonds is approximately 15.5% per annum. So, investing in hryvnia today is more profitable than simply keeping it in foreign currency.

You don’t need much to get started — one bond costs 1,000 hryvnias. There are investment options for different terms: short, medium, and long, which allows you to adapt investments to your personal plans.

Future forecasts

The trends remain quite calm so far: by the end of 2026, the dollar is expected to trade at around 45 hryvnias. Even with fluctuations, a sharp jump to 51 hryvnias seems unlikely.

Since the beginning of the year, the hryvnia has lost about 4% of its value, but thanks to the active measures of the National Bank and stable gold and foreign exchange reserves, a sharp collapse was avoided.

As a result, the times when the dollar was automatically associated with reliability and profit are a thing of the past. Now more and more attention should be paid to finding real investment tools that can bring real profits, and not just “lie under the mattress.”
