Cats have always been considered independent pets that easily tolerate loneliness. However, deeper emotional aspects are hidden under this image: for many cats, the absence of company can be a serious stress.

According to an Oregon State University study, 64% of cats have a strong attachment to humans, similar to the bond between children and their parents. This aspect of attachment is similar to both canine and human.

At the same time, in everyday life, cats look more autonomous, able to take care of themselves for several hours without help. They are great at routine tasks such as napping, grooming and playing.

However, it is important to consider the duration of the cat’s loneliness. Scientists recommend keeping certain limits: an adult cat can stay alone for one night without problems, but in the case of a long absence, further sitting without people can affect its psychological state. You should not leave the cat for more than 24-48 hours.

According to veterinarian Mikel Delgado, cats are sensitive to changes in their daily lives. Prolonged absence of the owner can cause them stress, anxiety and even unwanted behavior. Research in the journal PLOS One confirms that 67% of cats with symptoms of anxiety or separation exhibited disruptive behavior, 63% meowed excessively loudly, and 60% ignored their litter box.

The risk of such problems increases if the cat is alone and has no playmates. There are also risks in case of unforeseen circumstances – if an accident happens, the cat will be left alone with problems.

Leaving a cat for five days or longer is not a good idea. If such a situation is unavoidable, it is imperative that someone checks its condition.

Kittens need even more care. Babies under three months should not be left unattended for more than 20 minutes. At three months, their permissible time alone can be up to six hours, and up to half a day at eight months. Only after reaching the age of one year, the cat can calmly stay at home for the whole day.

In conclusion, cats don’t need the same constant attention as dogs, but that doesn’t mean they don’t care. Before leaving them alone for a long time, it is better to take care of their company to avoid unpleasant surprises that can make them feel worse.
