The film Urchin, which marks actor Harris Dickinson’s directorial debut, has been selected for the Un Certain Regard competition program at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. It features Ukrainian actress Karina Khymchuk.
Film critic Sonya Vselyubskaya reported this, noting that details about competition films are usually revealed gradually a few days before the festival. Karina played a small role in this film.
The plot revolves around a homeless man named Mike who wants to change his life but faces obstacles to self-destruction. The film is characterized as “absurd and raw,” its narrative examines the strange patterns preventing the hero from finding a way out.
The cast includes Karyna Khymchuk, Frank Dillane, Megan Northam, Amr Waqed, and Shauna Marie.
Karyna Khymchuk is a talented actress known for her roles in The Kings of Rap and Do You Love Me, for which she received a special award at the 14th Odesa International Film Festival. She also appeared in the Dutch TV series Ferry.
Harris Dickinson, 28, previously became prominent with his role in the movie Good Bad Girl, starring Nicole Kidman. “Urchin is his first project as a director.
The film was selected for the Un Certain Regard program along with works by famous directors such as Scarlett Johansson, Morad Mostafa, Diego Cespedes, and others.
At the press conference, Thierry Fremaux, the Artistic Director of the Cannes Film Festival, announced a record number of applications—2909 this year.
