The expert explained why the Kremlin’s demands are resurfacing again and whether we should expect escalation in the final round of negotiations
In his blog, expert Ruslan Bortnik provided details about escalating tensions with Russia. According to him, the latest events resemble the ultimatum that came at the beginning of the war and indicate an increase in Moscow’s stakes. There is an impression that Trump’s threats to impose new sanctions have had no effect on Russia, which continues to adhere to its interests. This complicates the situation for Trump, as he seeks to achieve some success in the 100-day term of his presidency.
The expert believes that some turning point has occurred between the parties, and the negotiations have failed again despite the efforts of the American diplomat Witkoff in Moscow. This allows Russia to return to its original positions related to the ultimatums. Bortnik predicts that the US will intensify its rhetoric towards Russia, and additional restrictions and the extension of previously imposed sanctions are possible.
He notes that this situation provides an opportunity, in particular, for President Zelensky, liberals in Europe, and Democrats in the US to justify the need for further support for Ukraine. However, Trump found himself in a difficult position: the support provided to Ukraine may be perceived as an excuse for Biden and the Democrats. At the same time, the refusal to take this step undermines his reputation in the context of the Kremlin’s desires.
Bortnik points out that further developments may lead either to the final phase of negotiations, when all parties try to outdo each other, or to a new escalation of battles.
