Ukrainian Defense Forces Continue to Repel Russian Attempts to Seize Buhaz Island in Kherson Region
The Ukrainian Defense Forces remain actively engaged in countering Russian military efforts to approach Buhaz Island in the Kherson region, where the occupiers are attempting to establish a foothold for further advancement.
In recent days, Russian forces have increased their activity in the southern direction, attempting to land on Buhaz Island, located near the village of Kizomys. This was reported by Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine, during a televised news marathon.
“The enemy is trying to cross water barriers. Over the past few days, they have made several attempts to land on Buhaz Island in the river zone of the south,” Voloshyn stated.
According to him, the occupiers are trying to cross water obstacles in the southern part of the Dnipro system. The main goal of these actions is to create a staging area for further crossing of the Dnipro River from the southern side.
Voloshyn also noted that the invaders are using boats to cross channels and the Dnipro itself, but Ukrainian defense forces have been successfully eliminating enemy groups during these attempts.
In cases where Russian troops manage to land on the island, they end up isolated with no way to retreat. In such situations, the occupiers’ command delivers food, water, and ammunition via drones, but the soldiers stranded there are forced to survive in isolation. Typically, within a few days, they either surrender or are neutralized by Ukrainian defenders.
Moreover, according to the spokesperson, Russian forces are using these operations not only for combat purposes but also for propaganda. Occupation media spread claims of control over certain islands or bridgeheads, even when these claims are untrue.
The village of Kizomys in the Kherson region was under Russian occupation from February 24 to November 11, 2022. Since its liberation, the area has been subjected to constant shelling by Russian forces.
It was also reported that Roman Mrochko, head of the Kherson City Military Administration, came under artillery fire while recording a video address.
