Стара проводка і нова напруга: чи зможе побутова техніка витримати перехід на 230 В

Old wiring and new voltage: will household appliances be able to withstand the transition to 230 V?

From July 1, Ukraine will see changes in the standard of electrical voltage: instead of the usual 220 volts, a new standard will be established—230 V. This has caused citizens to be concerned about the possible consequences for household appliances, particularly refrigerators, televisions, and boilers.

However, experts assure that there is no need to panic. As representatives of the energy company DTEK explain, the new standard only adapts Ukrainian standards to European ones. The EU has long used the 230 V standard, which is oriented towards most modern household appliances.

It is worth noting that household appliances can function from 200 to 250 V, so changing the number on paper will not affect the operation of your electrical appliances. Real equipment problems are caused by voltage surges in certain regions, which are associated with the deterioration of the infrastructure.

From July 1, clear limits for permissible deviations are also being introduced: from 207 to 253 V. This means that energy companies must maintain voltage within the specified limits. In this case, this is a positive change because, in some settlements, it fluctuated much more.

Why is this important? Stable voltage:

reduces the risk of electronics breakdowns;
allows the equipment to operate in optimal mode;
reduces the need for stabilizers;
improves energy efficiency by lowering overloads and power losses.
So, don’t fear the new numbers: the real problems lie in the old system. If your home constantly experiences power outages, this indicates existing problems that the new standard can help solve. It should be noted that the transition to the new voltage will not happen all at once—this change will be carried out gradually because, until now, the voltage has already fluctuated within 215–245 V.

We remind you that a new electricity tariff will also come into effect in Ukraine from June. News has also been published about an electric trap from DTEK, as a result of which Ukrainians may find themselves in debt for electricity consumed without a contract.
