Hidden non-vegetarian aspects: carefully check products that can deceive you
Switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet may seem simple—excluding meat, fish, and other animal products from the diet is enough.
However, the reality is more complicated: many seemingly harmless products may also not be suitable for vegetarians.
Let’s start with cheese. Many people consider it a great alternative to meat. But not all cheeses can be regarded as vegetarian since well-known types, such as “Parmesan,” “Gorgonzola,” and “Camembert,” contain the enzyme chymosin, which is produced in the stomachs of animals and starts the process of curdling milk.
Even the popular jelly is not vegetarian. Its texture is formed thanks to gelatin, a protein substance produced from animal bones and cartilage.
Similarly, the well-known food dye carmine (E120), which gives lollipops and jelly candies an intense red color, is made from female scale insects or their eggs.
Glazed cereals are no less dangerous for vegetarians. Despite their unkempt appearance, their glaze is often made from animal gelatin.
Finally, don’t forget about buckwheat, rice, and corn — these cereals are a real source of benefits and are recommended for daily consumption.
Earlier, it was also reported that mushroom coffee’s popularity is growing. Is it worth trying, and why does it give a boost of vigor?
