The legend comes to life: ”Baywatch” is back on screens

Fox has announced a reboot of the cult series “Baywatch.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the premiere of the new show is scheduled for the 2026/2027 television season.

The project will include 12 episodes, and Matt Nix, who previously worked on “Fire Notice” and “True Lies,” will be the showrunner. He will also participate as an executive producer, along with the creators of the original series, Michael Burke, Greg Bonanno, Doug Schwartz, and Dante Di Loreto.

The reboot promises to preserve the main elements of the original version, such as tense rescue operations, the drama of relationships between characters, and the atmosphere of beach life, emphasizing the courage of the rescuers.

The new project will feature new actors, and the plot will take place in the modern world. The main tasks of the main characters will be to protect the coast of Southern California.

“The original ‘Baywatch’ has become a symbol of beach culture and popularized lifeguards as iconic heroes. Now, by partnering with Fremantle, we are looking to bring that concept back in a refreshed format,” said Fox Television Network President Michael Thorne.

The original series debuted on NBC in 1989 and ran for 11 seasons, starring stars such as David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Blythe, Nicole Eggert, David Charvet, Carmen Electra, and Jason Momoa.

Fox previously tried to launch its own series about lifeguards called ‘Rescue: Hi-Surf’, but it was canceled after one season. Also in 2017, a film adaptation of ‘Baywatch’ was released, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.
