There is a serious problem in educational institutions: the teacher draws attention

There is a significant shortage of mathematics, physics, and chemistry teachers in Ukrainian schools, as applicants rarely choose these subjects to pursue higher education. In addition, graduates of pedagogical universities do not want to work in schools due to low salaries.

Andriy Zakaliuk, Director of the Department of Education of the Lviv City Council, commented on this situation during an interview for the media hub “Your City”. He noted that in his three years as a school director, he had not been able to find a single physics teacher.

“These specialties, especially engineering, where you need to know mathematics, are not popular. The situation with staff in schools for mathematics, chemistry, and physics is critical. Unfortunately, I predict that this problem will worsen. I have not been able to find a physics teacher for three years,” Zakaliuk emphasized.

According to the director, young teachers receive about 10 thousand hryvnias per month, while experienced teachers receive about 14 thousand. Therefore, one should not expect that teachers of mathematics and natural sciences will work in schools for such salaries.

Zakaliuk also pointed out that resolving the issue of increasing teachers’ salaries at the local level is difficult. The city authorities are trying to influence the situation through various programs and bonuses, but changes must occur at the state level.
