The case of Portnov’s death in Spain is being investigated as a premeditated murder

The National Police of Ukraine has initiated a criminal investigation into the premeditated murder of Andriy Portnov, a former adviser to ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, whose body was found dead in Madrid in late May.

This information was confirmed by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine in response to a request.

It is known that the case is being investigated under paragraphs 11 and 12 of part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for premeditated murder committed by a customer and by prior conspiracy of a group of persons. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

The prosecutor’s office did not specify whether there is cooperation with Spanish investigators. Additionally, it did not disclose the nature of the crime, citing the need to maintain the secrecy of the investigation.

The UCP noted that disclosing details of the case could harm further investigation, which would violate state interests.

Earlier, it became known that Spanish law enforcement agencies had refused to create a joint investigation team with the Ukrainian side. The Spanish newspaper El País reported that a few weeks before his death, Portnov transferred a property in Kozyn worth 2.5 million euros to his children.

On May 21, a shooting occurred in Pozuelo de Alarcón, near Madrid, resulting in the death of a 52-year-old man. The incident happened at around 9:15 a.m. when several bullets hit the victim on America Street. Medics who arrived at the scene declared him dead.
