The Verkhovna Rada will urgently discuss Zelensky’s draft law on NABU and SAPO
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced an initiative for a new bill aimed at strengthening the legal system in Ukraine. The bill will be urgently considered by the Verkhovna Rada, despite the announced four-week recess.
In his evening address, the President noted that numerous meetings had been held with the heads of key law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies. These meetings, which began in the morning, were aimed at a detailed analysis of the law enforcement situation. The participants in the conversation were representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Zelenskyy stressed that it was important for his administration to hear the opinions of each of the leaders and provide an opportunity to express their positions. He noted that a consensus had been reached on joint actions aimed at restoring a sense of justice through the inevitability of punishment.
The President also announced that the heads of departments should create a single action plan that will contain specific measures to strengthen the legal system in Ukraine. He emphasized that all signals and sentiments coming from society were taken into account.
In addition, Zelensky announced the preparation of a corresponding presidential bill, noting: “I will submit to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law that will support the rule of law and will be devoid of any Russian influence.”
Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko announced that next week there will be another meeting of law enforcement representatives in a composition similar to the one that gathered during the meeting with the President. The draft of this plan should be presented in two weeks, with a clear division of powers to prevent duplication in the work of the system.
European Solidarity MP Oleksiy Honcharenko suggested that the Verkhovna Rada may urgently convene next week to consider the President’s bill on NABU and SAPO. However, the official recess will last until August 20. Also, Holos MP Volodymyr Zaliznyak noted that despite the announced recess, measures may be necessary for urgent consideration.
Recently, the parliament approved bill No. 12414, which, according to some critics, may affect the independence of NABU and SAPO, which caused mass protests in various cities of the country.
