Police identify Russian general who ordered execution of Ukrainian civilians during occupation of Kyiv region
Ukrainian security forces have identified a Russian commander who, in March 2022, ordered the shooting of cars with civilians trying to leave the occupied territories in the Kyiv region.
According to the National Police, in March 2022, Russian military personnel established their positions between the settlements of Berezovka and Buzova in the Buchansky district of the Kyiv region. They opened fire on civilian vehicles trying to escape the occupation towards Zhytomyr.
The order to commit these crimes was given by the Chief of Staff of the 5th Separate Guards Tank Brigade, Nikolayenko Roman Volodymyrovych.
As a result of the actions of the Russian military on this route, 22 people died, including one young child, and another 37 people were injured, seven of them seriously. One of the injured women was declared disabled.
As part of the pre-trial investigation, police officers performed more than 400 investigative actions and conducted 70 forensic examinations, including medical, ballistic, and explosive tests.
Based on the evidence collected, investigators charged the Russian commander under Parts 1 and 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for the possibility of life imprisonment.
Law enforcement officers also published testimonies of witnesses to war crimes who lost loved ones and were injured while trying to escape from the occupation in the Kyiv region.
