Without Europe at the beginning: Trump will have a meeting only with Zelensky
According to BILD, Donald Trump intends to hold a private conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky first, after which European politicians will join the conversation.
On August 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington to meet with US President Donald Trump. Although the Ukrainian leader is accompanied by European leaders, as well as representatives of the EU and NATO, there is a risk of further deterioration in relations with the Trump administration.
According to BILD, Trump will initially meet only with Zelensky, and only later will other politicians join the negotiations. The meeting will be accompanied by a working lunch and further discussions in an expanded format.
Such circumstances are reminiscent of the previous meeting of the Ukrainian president, which took place in February and ended in a scandal that led to the temporary suspension of US military support for Ukraine.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are all traveling to Washington. The main topic of the talks will be the possibility of concluding a peace agreement with Russia.
Trump’s social media post, in which he stated: “Ukraine must be prepared to lose some territory to Russia, otherwise the longer the war goes on, the more land they will lose!!”
