Water bloom in the Dnieper: causes and safety of tap water

The Dnieper is starting to become covered with a green film: what causes this phenomenon, and what are its consequences?

Residents of the Dnieper have noticed that the reservoir is gradually turning green. The main reason for this is the active reproduction of blue-green algae. Hot weather and abundant sunlight create favorable conditions for this process.

However, in addition to natural factors, another important reason is water pollution caused by nitrates and phosphates. These pollutants interact with natural factors that contribute to the uncontrolled growth of algae.

According to Maria Belkina from an organization engaged in agriculture, the pollution is hidden behind insufficiently treated wastewater from enterprises and improperly applied and stored fertilizers in the fields.

A green film on the water is a phenomenon that poses a threat to the river ecosystem, as algae consume a large amount of oxygen during decomposition, which can lead to a mass fish kill.

In addition, about a third of the water supplied to the Kyiv water supply system is taken from the Dnieper. Therefore, residents of the capital are concerned about the quality of water during the flowering season.

Representatives of Kyivvodokanal urge not to panic, assuring that the water undergoes a multi-stage purification process, so the flowering will not affect the quality of the water supply. This phenomenon is taken into account in the technological processes of purification.
