“Oaths in blood”: expert explains the significance of Putin and Trump’s meeting in Alaska

Expert Ruslan Bortnyk noted that during the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, an informal agreement may be reached, even if only on a napkin. Leaders must look each other in the eye and establish the fundamental principles of the potential deal. Despite the possibility of signing declarations or memoranda, the primary objective is a gesture of reconciliation and an acknowledgment of shared positions.

According to Bortnyk, the United States seeks to avoid direct involvement in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. He emphasizes that even in the past, the United States did not participate in the Minsk agreements and the Istanbul talks, attempting to stay out of these processes.

Seeing this as a new stage, the expert believes that the agreement concluded between Trump and Putin may later serve as the basis for discussions among the Ukrainian, Russian, and European sides. He suggests that at the initial stage, a ceasefire agreement with specific conditions and deadlines could be established for further peace negotiations.

“Leaders must meet one-on-one to reach a common understanding,” concluded Ruslan Bortnyk, recalling the still unofficial but essential steps that could influence the further course of events. The prospects for further peace initiatives also require additional efforts and commitments from top leaders.
