The 1,000-hryvnia package has become less full: reasons for the increase in the price of potatoes and pork

The cost of food in Ukrainian markets has increased significantly, and today, 1,000 hryvnia buys considerably less than it did before.

Currently, prices for meat, fruits, and vegetables are rising faster than the general rate of inflation. Many products are already more expensive than in neighboring countries such as Poland and Romania.

Saleswoman Alla noted that demand for certain meat products has decreased – people are buying only a few chickens, while the cost of chicken ranges from 160 to 220 hryvnia per kilogram. Pork has increased in price by 30%, lard costs about 250 hryvnia, and the price of meat varies from 230 to 280 hryvnia. The main reasons for this are increased feed costs and a decrease in livestock due to the war.

Seasonal fruits have also become less affordable: apricots and peaches are sold for 200 hryvnias per kilogram, plums for 100 hryvnias, and blueberries now cost 180 hryvnias. The reason for the price increase is the consequences of frosts that destroyed part of the harvest, which is why some of the fruit has to be imported. Vegetables have not yet become cheaper: potatoes, carrots, and onions cost 30 hryvnias each, tomatoes for 80-100 hryvnias, eggplants for 60 hryvnias, and cucumbers for 40-50 hryvnias. It is expected that prices for vegetables from the “borscht set” may decrease by the end of the summer.

In 2022, 1,000 hryvnias could buy 2 kg of chicken, 2 kg of pork, 10 kg of potatoes, and 40 eggs. Today, this money allows you to buy only 1 kg of chicken, 1 kg of pork, 5 kg of potatoes, and 60 eggs. Sellers say that incomes have fallen, and it is no longer consistently profitable for them to go to fairs.

Experts predict that the cost of products is unlikely to decrease by 2026. It was previously reported that meat rations are becoming an absolute luxury due to new prices for bacon and sausages, which put Ukrainians in difficult financial conditions.
