Symon Petliura’s death mask and typewriter are being delivered to Kyiv from Canada

The death mask and typewriter of Symon Petliura, a prominent figure in the liberation struggle of 1917–1921, have already arrived in Ukraine and will soon undergo customs clearance. This was announced on August 21 during a roundtable discussion on the topic “105th Anniversary of the Miracle on the Vistula River,” Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Andriy Nazhos said.

A significant collection of approximately 4,000 unique items created by the Ukrainian diaspora following the loss of statehood was discovered in Canada. Emigrants in Western Europe initially kept these materials, and later moved to North America.

Nazhos noted that Ukrainian specialists traveled to Canada to describe and document the artifacts before returning them. “We plan to make this common history public, perhaps as early as early September,” he added.

Symon Petliura was a member of the General Secretariat of the Ukrainian Central Rada as General Secretary for Military Affairs. He later became Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and headed the Directory.

In Paris, on May 25, 1926, he was shot dead by the Jewish anarchist Samuel Schwarzbard at the intersection of Rue Racine and Boulevard Saint-Michel. Many historians believe that the Soviet secret services were behind this murder.
