Insomnia and stress: how summer heat affects health, according to research

Millions of people in the UK have had insomnia and high utility bills this summer, according to Citizens Advice, which has taken a toll on their health in the hot weather.

According to the Independent, research by the charity has revealed how four heatwaves, when temperatures topped 30°C, have affected people.

The survey found that almost 47% of Britons have struggled to sleep in the summer. In addition, 11% of respondents said their health had worsened, 14% felt stressed about themselves or their loved ones because of the heat, and 8% saw a negative impact on the health of family members.

On the financial side, 13% of those surveyed said their electricity bills had increased as they tried to cool their homes.

Overall, 45% of respondents have incurred additional costs related to increased energy consumption or the purchase of cooling devices. At the same time, 7% spent more than £200, which exceeds 11 thousand hryvnias.

Every third respondent (34%) reported encountering difficulties in cooling their home, and among renters, this figure was 40%.

The survey results highlight the vulnerability of housing conditions in the UK, which leads to health problems and financial difficulties on hot days.

According to the organizers of the survey, the solution to the problem of insufficient cooling in summer and heating in winter may lie in the modernization of the housing stock.
