Europeans reacted critically to Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly
US President Donald Trump’s speech at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly has caused mixed reactions among European diplomats, who noted his contradictory statements and the unpredictability of US foreign policy.
According to Politico, Trump spoke about Ukraine’s potential in a war with Russia, but his optimistic messages were accompanied by numerous contradictions and criticism from other states. EU representatives emphasized that his statements often change: “Today he says one thing, and tomorrow he says another,” which raises doubts about possible changes in Washington’s policy.
In his speech, the head of the White House covered several global issues: he called for the closure of borders, the cessation of purchases of Russian oil, and criticized countries for insufficient efforts to combat climate change. Some of his comments caused mixed reactions among the participants of the General Assembly, as they sounded like instructions.
Trump’s speech also revealed some contradictions: he claimed that the carbon footprint was insignificant, yet he simultaneously complained about air pollution in certain regions. Diplomats noted that Trump focused on the US’s domestic achievements, while presenting global challenges through the prism of American nationalism, without proposing constructive ways for international cooperation.
“This speech only confirmed that Trump’s approach to the international arena is based more on emotions than on facts,” an anonymous European official noted. He noted that such speeches are not a surprise, but have increased concerns about future US foreign policy.
Also, during a personal meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York, Trump emphasized the need for decisive NATO action in response to Russian violations of air borders.
