Four habits that promote the growth of germs in the bathroom and can lead to infections
When it comes to maintaining cleanliness in the home, many people focus on the kitchen. However, experts warn that the bathroom can be even dirtier. In some cases, the number of microbes here exceeds the kitchen. Express reports this.
Towels and bathroom mats
Wet towels and mats can easily become a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. Experts emphasize that microorganisms can accumulate after just three uses, especially if the fabric does not have time to dry. The situation with mats is even more complicated: feet often get wet on them, and washing methods are usually insufficient, as they may not be cleaned for several weeks.
Experts recommend washing towels at 60°C using detergent, and adding a glass of white vinegar during rinsing. This will help destroy microbes and eliminate unpleasant odors.
Toothbrush Holders
A toothbrush holder can be one of the dirtiest items in the house. Studies show that it ranks third in germs because it often remains wet after brushing your teeth. This creates favorable conditions for the growth of E. coli, staph, and other bacteria, which can then be re-infected with your toothbrush.
Experts recommend rinsing your holder with hot water every day and disinfecting it at least once a week. It’s also essential to store toothbrushes upright so they don’t come into contact with each other.
Shower Curtains
Moisture, soap scum, and steam all contribute to the growth of mold and mildew on shower curtains. Once these processes begin, the spores can spread through the air and settle on other surfaces. Experts say that more than 25% of shower curtains contain mold spores. Fabric curtains should be washed once a month, and if the stains persist, it’s recommended to replace them.
Faucet and handles
Faucets are constantly in contact with hands, which may be dirty or wet, and are usually not cleaned often enough. Experts emphasize that they can accumulate a significant amount of bacteria, especially in families with a large number of people. It is recommended to wipe down faucets and handles daily, especially during the cold season or if someone in the house is sick.
