Діти не погані, вони просто інші: думки педагога про сучасних підлітків

Children are not bad, they are just different: a teacher’s thoughts on modern teenagers

Ukrainian teacher Artur Proydakov, who was named one of the ten best teachers in the Global Teacher Prize, urges against characterizing today’s youth as a “bad generation.” He believes that teenagers’ behavior is a consequence of changes in society and the development of their thinking, rather than a reflection of their character.

Proydakov explains that the new generation is distinguished by courage, openness, and pragmatism. They boldly express their opinions and ask questions, even if this may be unusual for adults. “Modern children openly talk about their experiences. Protest actions in Ukraine are proof of this. They are not afraid to use frank statements, directly calling things by their real names,” the teacher notes.

Artur emphasizes that teenagers are looking for effective ways to complete tasks and are also trying to preserve their resources. For example, when he asks to read a literary work, the student can discuss a podcast on the same topic, showing that he is ready to answer questions and do homework without reading a classic text.

The teacher also emphasizes the influence of new technologies. Trends in short videos on TikTok and other platforms are shaping a new information culture, where young people prefer compressed formats. “Clip thinking, cases from TikTok and Reels—all this indicates a general trend towards short information. This is not due to the laziness of young people, but is a reflection of the era,” the expert summarizes.

In his opinion, older generations often complete tasks without inspiration, while modern children strive to get maximum results with minimal effort. This approach, according to Proydakov, requires understanding and support, not criticism, because it reflects the realities of modern learning.

Artur Proydakov urges parents and teachers to view teenagers as partners in the learning process and to value their straightforwardness and critical thinking. According to him, these qualities not only do not interfere but also contribute to the development of the skills necessary in the modern world, where speed, efficiency, and the ability to ask questions are key to success.
