Lukashenko is conducting closed negotiations with Europe to overcome isolation

Belarus has invited the European Union to open a dialogue to resolve the ongoing political crisis since 2020, following disputed elections in which the self-proclaimed president, Oleksandr Lukashenko, remained in power. This was reported by Serhiy Bratchuk, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, on his Telegram channel, citing Reuters data.

According to Western diplomats, at the end of September, the Belarusian embassy in Paris sent letters to the representative offices of several EU countries. The letters indicated a desire to meet with the Belarusian ambassador to the Vatican, Yury Ambrazevich, who, according to sources, oversees Minsk’s unofficial contacts with Western European countries.

Several European diplomats agreed to this meeting. One of the participants noted that Ambrazevych emphasized Belarus’s desire to exit international isolation and its readiness to support the end of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as well as future negotiations on security in Europe.

Sources report that Lukashenko seeks to take advantage of the political situation that, in his opinion, is being opened by Donald Trump, particularly regarding the possible relaxation of sanctions against the Belarusian regime. However, in the European Union, these intentions are treated with caution, given the constant support of Putin by the Belarusian authorities.

The US, in turn, sees this signal as an opportunity to distance Belarus from Moscow’s influence partially.
